ANTIOXIDANTS
| A study done in 1987 in patients with multiple chemical sensitivities (which Mitral Valve Prolapse is associated with) showed biochemical abnormalities. There was a highly impaired level of anti-oxidant levels detected in these patients, likely contributing to the feelings of ill health as well as their sensitivities. Treatments with anti-oxidants, including selenium, vitamin C, copper, zinc, and sulfur-containing amino acids was associated with major clinical improvement in 25% of the patients, and limited relief of symptoms in another 18%. In all patients where treatments were repeated, improvement in levels were observed following treatment. |
| DEFINITION: | These are a group of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that help protect the body from the formation of free radicals. Free radicals are atoms that can cause damage to cells, impairing the immune system, leading to infection and various degenerative diseases such as heart disease and cancer. |
| SOURCES: | Anti-oxidants can be obtained from food sources such as sprouted grains and fresh fruits and vegetables. It is however difficult to get enough of them from these sources to hold back the free radicals constantly being generated in our polluted environment. |
